Extraordinary Vintage Pens
Pelikan 1931 T111 Toledo PIF in 24K gold-plated sleeve with etched pelikans surrounded by fine tooling. [Martin Lehman (author of the Pelikan book) describes the process of making the binde: the motifs of the body were carved into a relief by using a corrosive method, deep parts were then burnished, distinguished motifs were gold-plated and parts of the line drawings were then re-engraved by hand.] Black hard rubber cap with etched clip (used only on this model) and knurled cap bands (also unique to this model). Amber celluloid barrel. Medium nib (other nibs available). New-old-stock. Near mint+. $6600
Montblanc 1920 12 Safety Eyedropper-fill in Black Hard Rubber. The largest safety pen made by Montblanc! One of the "Holy Grails" for Montblanc collectors. Outstanding condition with crisp knurling, fully legible cap and barrel imprints. Double-broad nib. Cap also has the "Stoffhaus" (Montblanc boutique at the time) imprint. Shown open. The barrel has an owner's imprint "Walter Ramm." Excellent+ $11500
Pullman 1932 Meteor BF in BCHR. GFT. Three rows of "checkerboard" chasing, 2 on the cap and one on the barrel. Blind cap is knurled. Correct "D & D Paris" nib (Demley & Degan were the founders of the Meteor, the French company which licensed the Pulman technology). GFT. Medium nib. Barrel factory imprinted "Brevete en tous pays" (patented in all countries). Unusual design, with a BHR plug attached to the underside of the gold-filled hinged top door. A tad of cap band and cap-top brassing, otherwise near mint. $2200
Montblanc 1935 236 PL PIF in Platinum (perhaps Montblanc's most beautiful celluloid!). GFT. Medium, flexible nib. Near mint. $2400
Montblanc 1955 149 in Black Celluloid (not "Precious Resin"). GFT, with outer cap bands in Sterling Silver. This is not the early "long window" version, but the window is about twice the length normally found, an interesting manufacturing variance. The vertical lines in the window are perfect. The black barrel does show a minor cap posting line and one very small mar (otherwise the pen is near mint). But the bonus is the wonderful medium fine, flexible, "18C" nib (the "18C" nib was produced by Montblanc for pens being exported to France and Italy only). $2000
Parker 1916 #28 eyedropper-fill in Red Bakelite with a Black Hard Rubber cap. NPT. The largest size (and rarest) pen in this series. Wonderful condition, with crisp cap and barrel imprints, and a huge #8 nib (broad). Just the word "Janesville" is a little weak in the barrel imprint, otherwise near mint. $2500
Zerollo/ Dunhill 1935 Twopen Safety Matchstick-fill in Silver Pearl with Blue Veins (gorgeous celluloid!). The matchstick is built into the inner cap. GFT. The pen contains two ink sacs, pressure bars, nibs and feeds. Turning the bottom knob propels one nib while retracting the other. The design was to allow two different color inks in one pen. The pen is mint, and has matching (broad, oblique) nibs marked "MONDIAL 14kt 5." Mondial nibs were made by the LUS pen company, founded near Milan, Italy, probably in 1929, and registered in 1931. Nib making began quite early, and was followed in 1934 by manufacturing fountain pens. Celluloid pens were marketed under the Mondial name. I can't tell you with 100% assurance exactly why a matched set of period LUS/Mondial nibs are mounted in the Dunhill pen. Was Dunhill buying nibs from LUS, a nearby maker of high quality nibs? Was there a marketing agreement between Dunhill and LUS/Mondial? At this point, there are no definitive answers. By the way, the Mondial LUS company still prospers today. $6500
Soennecken 1935 Prasident BF in Black. GFT. The very rare, first year Prasident with the bulbous cap lip. Visualated barrel. To access the filler button, the sleeve on the bottom of the barrel retracts by turning anticlockwise. The pen uses a filler tube (like a Parker Vacumatic) so several pushes of the white casein button are applied to completely fill the pen. Large medium/broad nib. New-old-stock. Mint. [Two available. The second with a fine, flexible nib]. Both sold. $1950
Soennecken 1933 Rheingold No. 915 BF in Lapis (very rare). GFT. Black hard rubber inner cap with the "S" logo in white casein surrounded by the black "sunburst." To access the filler button, the sleeve on the bottom of the barrel retracts by turning anticlockwise. One push on the BHR button fills the pen. Medium, italic nib. Barrel imprint is highlighted in white (I'll remove this on request). New-old-stock. Mint. $1875
Torelli 2010 The master penmaker's version of the iconic 1946 MB 139. This one in Grey Pearl Acrylic with white 14K trim. The inner cap is topped with two inlaid concentric circles, in red and blue, with a white dot at the center peak. Torelli also manufactures the hard rubber feed and the plunger-fill mechanism. His pens are guaranteed for his lifetime. Fitted with a tri-color MB 149 18K broad nib. New-old-stock. Mint. [See item #s 157 & 158 for two Torelli Parker 51's]. $1650
Pelikan 1935 100N Magnum Emege PIF in Tortoise with Red Hard Rubber cap, inner cap and turning knob. Pelikan's only oversize vintage pen, explaining its high demand among Pelikan collectors. GFT. The cap imprinted "Emege," representing Pelikan's licensed Portugese distributor, who so signed all the Pelikans he sold, so he didn't need to repair under warrantee any pens he did not sell. Fine, flexible nib. Visualated barrel. Near mint. $2400
Astoria 1933 #4 Dux "Click" filler in Lapis (rare and beautiful!). GFT. Astoria was purchased by Montblanc in 1932, and continued as a Montblanc sub-brand. Black ends, with the rotational arrow imprinted just above the knurled turning knob – ½ a turn operates the cam mechanism which forces the pressure bar against the bladder. When released it makes a resounding "click." Double-broad, flexible nib. Near mint+. $1250
Waterman 1920 552V LEC (Long Extended Case) LF in 18K Solid Gold Overlay over BHR. The LEC model in the full length "V" size is extremely rare! French hallmarks. Extra-fine, extra-flexible nib. A couple of very minor pinpoint dings, otherwise near mint. $1200
Waterman 1920 444 Safety eyedropper-fill in Sterling Silver "Night & Day" pattern over Black Hard Rubber. Through the years we've presented a few of these in the 442 size, but this is the first 444 I have ever seen. Quite rare! French Hallmarks, including on the 18K nib. Fine, flexible nib. Near mint (has been filled). Will polish on request. Unrestored. $1200
Pelikan 1929 First model Pelikan (before they named it the Model 100) PIF in Jade Pearl. Very rare! Barrel and section are one piece Bakelite. Amber celluloid barrel. Bandless cap and cylindrical inner cap (parallel sides). Very rare. Nib with correct "heart" vent hole (medium, flexible). Knurled turning knob. Near mint. $1900

One of the rarest and most desirable of the Sheaffer Desk Bases (perhaps second only to the Egyptian motif Cat desk set. 217 Wahl Eversharp 1943 Eversharp Fifth Avenue LF $64 pen. This is a rare version, with "6$4" factory imprinted on the cap (more about this in a moment). Martin L. Strauss bought the shaky Wahl Co. in 1939. By the early 1940's, with their sponsorship of the radio show Take it or Leave It," both the phrase The $64 Question and the Eversharp Company were on the map. Strauss sold tens of millions of dollars of $64 model pen and pencil sets. It is believed that the few of these pens and sets which have solid gold caps factory imprinted "6$4" caps (like this example) were not sold but were awarded as prizes on the radio show, and are therefore extremely rare. In Midnight Blue with 14K cap. No dents or dings. Near mint. $350

Waterman 1900 Model 0332 ½ Taper-cap in Gold-filled "Chased" pattern on BHR. Quite rare and beautiful! Crisp cap imprint. Chased "snail" design on barrel. Indicia engraved in Olde English script "AMC." Fine, flexible nib. Near mint+ $600
Waterman 1907 #16 eyedropper-fill in smooth Black Hard Rubber. NPT. A wonderful example of an early and large Waterman pen (most pens at the time were either the 2 or the 4 size). Fine nib. Perhaps a tiny amount of imprint wear (perhaps not), otherwise near mint. $250
Waterman 1915 0512 safety eyedropper-fill pen in gold-filled Hand Engraved Vine pattern overlay on BHR. The Safety pen was so named because the cap now screwed onto the barrel, making a much tighter seal against leaking. Earlier "slip caps" had a bad habit of separating from the pen barrel while in the user's pocket. Produced with many different overlay patterns, many collectors feel the Hand Engraved Vine pattern is the most beautiful, especially when the pen is fully covered, as is this one. The indicia is non-engraved. One small depression at the edge of the indicia, otherwise near mint. Unrestored. $750
Waterman 1915 #0552 ½ L.E.C. (Long Extended Case) LF in Gold-filled "Basket-Weave" pattern. Indicia engraved in Olde English Script: "VBG." Medium, extra-flexible nib. Outstanding, near mint+ condition. $400

Waterman 1922 #452 ½ V LF ring-top in Sterling Silver "Daisy-Weave" pattern over Black Hard Rubber. I put the two next to each other so you can see the difference in the pattern. Daisy-weave is much rarer. Fine, extra-flexible nib! (The nib in the Basket-Weave is rarer). A little ambering on the hard rubber underlay, otherwise near mint with no dents, dings or wear. Will polish on request. $250
Waterman 1925 42 Safety eyedropper-fill in Woodgrain Hard Rubber. Very, very rare! Double imprint (horizontal on barrel; vertical just above the turning knob). Extra-fine nib. New-old-stock. Mint. Unrestored. $325
Waterman 1927 #5 LF in Red Ripple. GFT. "Pink" color band in cap, and "Pink" signed nib, signifying a fine, extra-flexible nib. A tad of brassing to the clip ball, otherwise near mint. $500
Waterman 1928 51V LF in Red Ripple. NPT. Very rare size! Perfect for a diary, Filo-Fax, checkbook or journal. Broad, italic nib. New-old-stock. Near mint. $350
Waterman 1928 #52V LF in Blue Green Ripple (rare). When other pen manufacturers were switching to celluloid, Waterman had just spent a fortune developing colored ripple hard rubber, so they didn't switch to plastic. The pens, while beautiful, weren't successful in the marketplace and are rare today. Waterman did eventually switch to Celluloid with the introduction of the Patrician! GFT. Medium, flexible, italic nib. New-old-stock. Mint. $300

Waterman 1939 #2 LF in Black. Made by Waterman France for export, most likely to the UK and/or the US. GFT. "Over-the-top" clip, similar to the 100 Year pen introduced in the US the same year (see item below). On an historical note, in September of this year France declared war on Germany (surrendering about 9 months later). Medium, flexible nib. Near mint. $150
Waterman 1939 Hundred Year LF in Blue. GFT. The design of the first year of the 100 Year Pen includes the "over-the-top" clip, rippled cap and barrel, and no cap bands. Quite hard to find today, especially without crazing or a cap lip crack. This example is just about perfect. The streamlined body design and the clip are actually patented. Interestingly, this was the world's first Lucite (Dupont acrylic) pen, allowing for its transparency! Before the 1940 model run, the name of which was changed from "Hundred Year" to "100 Year," Waterman also switched to celluloid, leaving Lucite available for Dupont's war production needs. Fine, flexible nib. Near mint+. $850
